Welcome to Salem on Monday, the thirty-first of October, 1692. The hangings are finished, and the special court is not yet dismissed. Nineteen people have been hanged. Giles Corey has been pressed under stones. The jail on Prison Lane is still full, and Governor Phips has not put the Court of Oyer and Terminer away. This is no feast. The meeting does not keep All Hallows. Fish dries on the flakes, and Salem Village is still quarreling over its minister, its fences, and its fear.

Savannah Martin, seamstress and petition writer, was found this morning strangled in the lean-to shadow of Jonathan Corwin's house. She was kinswoman to Susannah Martin of Amesbury, hanged in July. The rope was new hemp, cut from a coil in the jail yard. A hog-bristle poppet lay in the gutter, and a rain-washed scrap of her petition was shut in her fist. The scene is dressed as the Devil's justice. A living hand tied the knot. Who murdered her?
